UV printing on acrylic, glass and metal
Conventional printing ink dries by soaking into paper. That is a quiet assumption behind almost every press, and it falls apart the moment the surface is glass. UV printing solves the problem differently, and in doing so it opens up materials that ordinary printing cannot touch.
Curing, not drying
UV ink does not dry. It cures: ultraviolet light triggers a reaction that turns the liquid ink into a solid film in a fraction of a second, while it is still sitting exactly where it was laid down.
Because nothing has to be absorbed, the surface underneath no longer needs to be absorbent. That single change is what lets a press print on acrylic, glass, metal, rigid plastic and heavily coated board, none of which will take conventional ink.
What it is actually used for
In practice UV work is specialty work: printed acrylic panels and signage faces, awards and trophies, promotional merchandise, control panels and instrument faces, display pieces, and short-run items where the material matters more than the quantity.
It also handles jobs where a printed surface has to survive being touched. A cured UV film is hard and abrasion-resistant in a way an uncured printed sheet is not, which is why it holds up on anything handled daily.
Adhesion is the thing to test, not assume
Ink curing on a surface is not the same as ink bonding to it. Two acrylic sheets from different suppliers can behave completely differently, and some plastics need a surface treatment or a primer before they will hold ink at all.
So test on your material, not on a similar one. Ask for a printed sample on the actual stock you intend to use, then do the simplest check there is: press adhesive tape firmly over the print and pull it off sharply. If ink lifts, the combination is wrong and it is far cheaper to learn that on one sample.
White ink, and the order the layers go down
On a clear or dark substrate, colour alone will disappear. UV printing solves this with a white underbase: a layer of opaque white printed first, with the colour laid on top of it, so the artwork reads against the material rather than through it.
There is a second case worth knowing. When printing onto the back of clear acrylic or glass so it is viewed through the material, everything reverses: the artwork must be mirrored, and the white goes down last rather than first. Tell your printer which side will face the viewer before anything is prepared.
Preparing artwork for a UV job
Supply vector artwork wherever possible, built at the real finished dimensions rather than scaled. Text and logos stay crisp at any size, and cut paths for shaped pieces can be taken straight from the same file.
Then state three things explicitly in the file or the email: the exact material and its thickness, which face is being printed, and whether you want a white underbase. Most UV problems trace back to one of those three being assumed rather than agreed.
Getting a UV job quoted
UV pricing is driven by area and by setup rather than by run length in the way offset is, so a small quantity is not automatically uneconomic. That makes it a practical route for prototypes, one-off displays and small merchandise batches.
