Hang tags and care labels for apparel brands
For a clothing brand the hang tag is often the only printed thing a customer holds before deciding to buy, and the care label is the only one that stays with the garment for its whole life. They tend to be ordered last, from whoever is cheapest, and it shows. They are worth more attention than that.
The hang tag does the selling
A hang tag carries the brand mark, the price, the size, and usually a barcode. Everything beyond that is a choice, and the choices are where brands separate. Fabric composition, a line about where it was made, a QR code to the collection, a care summary: all optional, all telling the customer something about how considered the brand is.
It is also the cheapest premium signal available. A tag on 350 GSM board with a matte finish and a clean eyelet costs a few rupees more than a thin gloss one, and it is held in the hand at the exact moment the purchase is being decided. Very little else in a clothing brand's budget buys attention at that point for that money.
Board, finish and the string
For hang tags, stiffness is the whole point: a floppy tag reads as cheap immediately. Somewhere from 300 to 400 GSM is the usual range, and the higher end feels noticeably better for very little extra. Uncoated board takes a debossed or foiled mark beautifully and feels more considered than gloss, which suits most apparel positioning.
The attachment is not a detail either. A plastic tagging pin is fast and cheap and looks it. Cotton string or a ribbon through a metal eyelet costs more per unit and changes how the tag is perceived, because it is the part the customer actually touches when they pick the garment up.
The care label has to survive the garment
The care label is a different product with different rules. It stays in the garment through every wash, so it has to be printed on a material that holds ink through repeated laundering, and it has to be soft enough not to irritate the skin where it sits.
Printed satin and taffeta labels are the common route: soft, inexpensive and clear when printed well. Woven labels cost more, carry no printed ink to wash off, and are what most brands use for the main neck label while printing the care and size information separately. The mistake to avoid is ordering an ordinary printed label and discovering it is illegible after five washes.
What has to be on it
Care labels carry the fibre composition, the care symbols or instructions, the size, and the country of manufacture. For anything exported, the destination market sets these rules and they are stricter than the domestic ones: the EU requires fibre content in specified terminology, and several markets require the information in local languages.
Composition is the item that most often causes a problem, because it must be accurate and it changes between production batches when the fabric supplier changes. Confirm it against the actual fabric before the label order, not against the tech pack, and build the label order into the same approval step as the fabric.
Making the pieces look like one brand
Most apparel brands end up with a tag from one supplier, a care label from another and a poly bag or box from a third, printed at different times against different colour references. The result is a brand that is nearly consistent, which is worse than it sounds when the pieces sit together in a customer's hands.
The fix is a single Pantone reference used across every component, and where possible a single supplier. A brand colour built in CMYK on the tag and separately interpreted on a woven label will not match, and nobody notices until all the parts arrive at the same time.
Ordering sensibly
Tags and labels are small, cheap items with real setup costs, so ordering them per drop is expensive. Print the whole season in one run where the design is common, and vary only what must vary. Size and composition change per style; the brand mark does not.
We print hang tags, labels and apparel packaging in Lahore alongside the carton work, so the tag, the label and the box can be run against one colour reference instead of three. Send the artwork with the fabric composition confirmed and we will quote the season rather than the drop.
