Pressure-sensitive, shrink sleeve or wrap-around labels
There are three practical ways to get printed branding onto a bottle, jar or tub, and the choice is usually made by accident: whoever quotes first proposes what they run. That is backwards. The container shape and the filling line decide this, and getting it wrong is expensive because it is discovered after the labels are printed.
Pressure-sensitive: the printed sticker
A pressure-sensitive label is printed on facestock with adhesive already on the back, supplied on a roll, and applied by pressing it onto the container. No heat, no glue pot, no drying. It is the most common labelling method in the world for good reason: it is the simplest thing that works.
It needs a surface it can lie flat against. A cylinder is fine, and so is a gentle taper. What defeats it is compound curvature, where the surface bends in two directions at once, because a flat label cannot conform to that without wrinkling. If your container has a waist or a strongly moulded shape, this is the constraint that will decide the job.
Shrink sleeves: printed film that takes the container's shape
A shrink sleeve is a printed tube of film slipped over the container and then passed through heat, which shrinks it tight to whatever shape is underneath. Because it conforms rather than adheres, container shape stops being a limitation: it will follow a waist, a moulded grip, a neck taper, all of it.
It also gives you the whole container. A sleeve can run from base to neck with no visible seam and no unprinted panel, which is why premium beverages and personal care products use them. And because the sleeve can extend over the cap, it doubles as a tamper-evident seal, which is why pharmaceutical and supplement bottles use them too.
Wrap-around: film, glue and the lowest unit cost
A wrap-around label is a printed film or paper sheet wrapped around a cylindrical container and glued where the two ends meet. There is no adhesive across the label itself, only at the seam, which makes it the cheapest of the three at volume by a clear margin.
The trade-off is that it only works on a true cylinder, and it needs a gluing applicator on the filling line. It is the standard choice for high-volume beverage and household products, and rarely the right choice for a small brand, because the setup assumes volume that makes the saving worth having.
The filling line decides more than the design does
Each of these needs different equipment. Pressure-sensitive needs an applicator head. Shrink sleeves need a sleeve applicator and a heat tunnel, which is a real capital item. Wrap-around needs a glue applicator. Whoever fills your product either has that machine or does not.
So the first question is not which looks best, it is what the filling line already runs. Specifying shrink sleeves for a product filled by a contract packer with no heat tunnel produces a beautiful sample and an unusable order. Ask the filler before you brief the printer, not after.
Cost, and where it actually sits
At the label itself, wrap-around is cheapest, pressure-sensitive is in the middle and shrink sleeves cost most, because a sleeve prints more area per unit and uses more film. But the label price is not the whole cost. Application speed, changeover time and reject rate on the line all move the real number.
The honest comparison is cost per filled container, not cost per label. A sleeve that runs clean at speed can beat a cheaper label that jams. Ask for pricing on the label and ask the filler what each method does to line throughput, then add them together.
Choosing without guessing
Work through it in this order. Is the container a true cylinder, and are you running high volume through a line with a glue applicator? Wrap-around. Does the shape curve in two directions, or do you need full-height coverage or a tamper seal? Shrink sleeve. Anything else, and especially anything where you may change container later? Pressure-sensitive, because it is the least committed option.
