Label materials: BOPP, PE, PET, metalized and paper
Label material is chosen far more casually than board is, usually because it costs less and feels less consequential. It is not. The material decides whether the label survives a fridge, a squeeze, a wash-down or a shipping container in a Karachi summer, and every one of those failures happens after the product is on sale.
Paper: the default, and where it stops working
Paper facestock prints beautifully, takes a matte or gloss coating well, costs the least and recycles with the container in most cases. For dry goods that live in a cupboard, it is the right answer and there is no reason to spend more.
It fails on contact with water. A paper label on a refrigerated bottle absorbs condensation, cockles, and lifts at the edges. It fails again on anything that will be wiped, handled with wet hands or stored in humidity. If either applies, paper is the wrong starting point regardless of budget.
BOPP: the workhorse film
BOPP is a stretched polypropylene film and it is the most widely used label material after paper. It is waterproof, resists oils and mild chemicals, tears far less readily than paper, and prints well in both white and clear versions. The clear version is what produces the no-label look on a glass or clear plastic container.
For most Pakistani products that face any moisture at all, from beverages to personal care to household chemicals, BOPP is the sensible default. It costs meaningfully more than paper and meaningfully less than the specialist films, and it solves the majority of real-world durability problems.
PE: the one that squeezes
Polyethylene film is soft and stretchy in a way BOPP is not. That matters for one specific case: squeezable containers. A BOPP label on a squeeze bottle wrinkles and eventually lifts at the corners because it will not move with the container. A PE label deforms and returns.
So the rule is simple. If the customer will squeeze it, specify PE. Sauces, lotions, shampoos and anything in a soft tube belong here. If nobody squeezes it, PE is an unnecessary cost and BOPP is the better choice.
PET: heat, stiffness and clarity
PET film is stiffer and considerably more heat-resistant than BOPP or PE, and its optical clarity is the best of the three. That combination suits labels that will see warmth, such as products near an oven or a container that gets hot-filled, and it suits premium clear-on-clear applications where the film must be invisible.
It is the most expensive of the common films and stiff enough that it does not conform well to tight curves. Specify it when heat or clarity genuinely demand it, not as a general upgrade, because for most products BOPP does the same job for less.
Metalized film: where the shine comes from
Metalized film carries a thin vapour-deposited aluminium layer that produces a genuine reflective metallic surface, not a printed imitation of one. Printing translucent inks over it lets the metal show through as coloured metallic, which is an effect no ink alone reproduces.
It reads as premium immediately and it is the standard for spirits, confectionery and cosmetics where shelf presence justifies the cost. Two caveats worth knowing: it is opaque, so nothing shows through it, and the metal layer complicates recycling. If a sustainability claim is part of the brand, that is a real tension to resolve rather than ignore.
Specifying it properly
Tell the printer four things and the material chooses itself: what the container is made of, whether it will be wet or refrigerated, whether anyone will squeeze it, and how long it must look new. Those cover nearly every failure mode without anyone having to name a film.
Then ask for a sample on the actual container and test it the way the product will be treated: refrigerate it, wet it, handle it, squeeze it.
